Everyone makes a big deal about microphones. Quality matters, but it matters less than what you put into it. That said: our main recording mics are Universal Audio Sphere modeling microphones, with Shure SM57s for handheld work.

Logic Pro, Pro Tools, and Ableton Live

We’re set up for 6 musicians and 6 vocalists. The room includes two Roland RD-88 keyboards, three direct boxes for guitars and bass, and a Roland TD-27 drum kit.

Yes. Drums, bass, guitars, and pianos can all track together — that’s how you capture a live groove.

Yes. You send me a rough mix, I lay down tracks at the studio, and I send the stems back for your approval. Then you add your own performances — recorded in your environment — and send those stems back to me to incorporate into the full mix. There are many ways to do this; that’s a good starting point.

On West 73rd Street in Manhattan — right next to the Dakota and the Imagine memorial in Central Park. You’ll be recording steps from some of the most storied musical real estate in New York.

Rehearsals are recorded, and mp3 is the quickest and easiest format to send. Full-resolution WAV audio files are also available — though for a rehearsal, that’s usually overkill.

An mp3 is a compressed file — small, easy to email, perfect for review and practice. A WAV is full-quality uncompressed audio — what you’d want for a final master or release. A stem is an individual track (just the vocals, just the drums) pulled out of a mix so it can be worked on separately. We’ll deliver whichever you need for your project.

All of them. I’ve spent decades working with Sesame Street, which had me recording with young children and established stars alike — I’ve worked with everyone from kids taking their first steps in music to legends like Eartha Kitt, Don Sebesky, Galt MacDermot, Nancy LaMott, Divine, and Alan Menken. The only requirement is that you love music.

I love working with writers — YES.

Let’s make a recording! You can certainly gift a recording session or sessions – you’ll have a tape of a very memorable gift.

Right up my alley. I have worked on a new show almost every year.

Come ready to sing something — that’s it. And if you’re in doubt about what to bring, sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It shows off your range quickly, and everybody knows it.

Sing something you’re comfortable with. An audition isn’t the place to experiment — it’s the place to show what you do best.

Not important. Some of the best musicians in history couldn’t read a note — the Beatles, for starters. If you can hear it and feel it, we can work with it.

It always helps us get on the same “page” (pun intended). But if you’re a songwriter, just sing your song — that’s all the sheet music we need to start.

Yes.
